Tuma’s Books is an online/popup bookstore based in NYC with a uniquely diverse selection of books, curated by an avid reader and educator. As a Black, Muslim, First Generation, Gambian-American, the owner, Fatuma aka Tuma Hydara didn’t have access to books that reflected her unique identities.

All readers, especially those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color and have been historically underrepresented, deserve to see their heritage, culture, and experiences validated and representation in great stories. There is also great power in reading diversely and learning about others to help build empathy and a more inclusive world without racism, bigotry, or prejudice.

Our mission at Tuma’s Books is to offer readers of all ages diverse, compelling books representing the different cultural identities, traditions, and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) people that they might not otherwise find on their own. We aim to offer titles that will delight, inspire, and teach you because we need to create a world that is safe for all of us.

Authentic representation matters; let’s read diversely together!
